Achievements: Citation for exemplary service, 2347;
fifteen decorations as of 2372
Noncommissioned officer--did not attend Academy. Enlisted in Starfleet in 2346. Assigned to U.S.S. Rutledge under Captain Benjamin Maxwell. Served during height of Cardassian conflict.
In 2347, Rutledge responded to Cardassian attack on Federation colony at Setlik III, but was unable to prevent civilian massacre. O'Brien successfully improvised repairs to a malfunctioning transporter unit, preventing the capture of himself and 13 other Starfleet personnel. Also assisted in rescue of several survivors. Promoted to Rutledge tactical officer.
O'Brien transferred to U.S.S.Enterprise NCC-1701-D in 2364. Served as conn officer until stardate 41249.3. Assigned as transporter chief in 2365. Served with distinction. In 2367, when Captain Maxwell went renegade, attacking Cardassian ships and threatening to re-establish hostilities between them and the Federation, O'Brien persuaded Maxwell to stand down. In 2368, when the Enterprise was disabled after collision with a quantum filament, O'Brien and Ensign Ro Laren successfully assisted engineering personnel in averting an explosion despite a major power failure in the engineering section. Shortly after stardate 45571, O'Brien, Counselor Deanna Troi and Lieutenant Commander Data were temporarily possessed by an alien entities, which caused them to take hostages in Ten Forward in an attempt to take over the ship. The entities were eventually defeated.
In 2369, O'Brien transferred to station Deep Space Nine, promoted to chief of operations. Endeavored to restore station systems stripped by Cardassians and integrate them with Federation technology. On stardate 46925.1, alien software life-form was accidentally downloaded into station's systems from a Gamma Quadrant probe. O'Brien determined it was the source of stationwide system malfunctions and sucessfully neutralized it, placing it in its own backup directory, without destroying it. In 2371, while doing maintenance, O'Brien accidentally activated an old Cardassian counterinsurgency program that disabled the station and endangered personnel before it was neutralized.
After 2371, O'Brien acted as chief engineer of U.S.S. Defiant. Served with distinction in 2372 when Defiant was disabled after a Jem'Hadar attack in the Gamma Quadrant; he brought crucial ship's systems back on line and improvised weapons. O'Brien was on mission with Jem'Hadar team to destroy an Iconian gateway that had been commandeered by a renegade Jem'Hadar band. In 2373, O'Brien was instrumental in restoring and capturing a crashed Jem'Hadar ship on Torga IV.
O'Brien had several experiences with time travel. In 2371, when Captain Sisko, Lieutenant Commander Dax and Dr. Bashir ended up in Earth's 21st century due to a transporter accident, O'Brien devised the means to rescue them. Later that year, due to a temporal displacement phenomenon, a duplicate of O'Brien from the near future ended up effectively replacing an earlier version of himself, who actually died. In 2373, O'Brien traveled with several colleagues back to the 23d century, becoming involved in the Kirk-era Tribble incident.
Since 2374, O'Brien has served with distinction during the recent conflict with the Dominion-Cardassian alliance, mainly as Defiant chief engineer. Also recently undertook undercover assignment for Starfleet Intelligence, which uncovered a Dominion plot to employ assassins from the Orion Syndicate to murder a Klingon Ambassador.
